LFW & NYFW: Why Should Offsetting Carbon Emissions Be More Than a Trend?

LFW & NYFW: Why Should Offsetting Carbon Emissions Be More Than a Trend?

While you're reading this, we are neutralizing the carbon emissions from the "Brazil: Creating Fashion for Tomorrow" exhibition, part of the official London Fashion Week SS24 schedule. Check out the first day of the event here.

However, what's the importance of neutralizing CO2? What does it actually mean? If you're wondering about that, we will answer your questions.

This is not Simple Organic's first time supporting sustainable "behind-the-scenes" initiatives. In fact, in 2023, we have a list of carbon offset actions: the BCFT exhibition at LFW, the Tim Music Rio festival, and PatBo's runway show at NYFW.

WHAT IS NEUTRALIZING AN EVENT'S CARBON EMISSIONS IMPORTANT?

LFW & NYFW WHY OFFSET EVENTS' CARBON EMISSIONSCoincidently - or not - on September 16th, during the BCFT exhibition, we celebrated the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. A great reminder of why carbon offsetting is a valuable task. The intent is to minimize the consequences of global warming.

That's why we extended this enterprise, already strong at Simple, to events that share similar values and goals, be it related to sustainability or other environmental and social issues. We work to generate a positive impact not only through our products but also with initiatives that our community believes in and consumes.

WHAT DOES CARBON OFFSETTING MEAN?

Offsetting carbon is to neutralize all the CO2 emitted by a given activity through actions that help the environment. Among a few methods, we can plant a number of trees per a specific quantity of emitted gas, compensating for this generated pollution.

When we at Simple state we offset an event's carbon emissions, we are saying we neutralized:

  • The electric energy consumed
  • Transport, by land and air, of all the staff, models, and artists
  • Assembly and disassembly of the physical structure
  • Solid waste management

And more!

Why is combining carbon offsetting and fashion the right match? According to the UN, clothing manufacturing generates 2% to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. And this growing number is due to the popularity of fast fashion.

To get an idea, the equivalence when neutralizing is: 1 ton of emitted CO2 = 7 planted trees.

Oh, and if you are now curious about your own carbon footprint, you can check it out here.

GET TO KNOW THE EVENTS NEUTRALIZED BY SIMPLE

Considering our recent participation at London Fashion Week, we've been 9 times at Fashion Weeks around the planet.

It's worth a quick recap about our connection to the fashion world. We were launched in 2017 at São Paulo Fashion Week and returned 4 more times. We were also at Milan Fashion Week in 2022. And at New York Fashion Week twice, first in 2021 and just recently in 2023.

We've sponsored the carbon offsetting of three events in particular:

1. BRAZIL: CREATING FASHION FOR TOMORROW EXHIBITION

LFW & NYFW WHY OFFSET EVENTS' CARBON EMISSIONSThe most recent carbon-neutral event was part of the LFW schedule. The inspiring exhibition was a partnership between us at Simple Organic and the Embassy of Brazil in London.

It spotlighted environmentally conscious designers who use sustainable solutions, such as innovative fabrics, in their creations. Alongside them, Simple also displayed some of our vegan, cruelty-free, carbon-neutral products and ingredients.

2. TIM MUSIC RIO

LFW & NYFW WHY OFFSET EVENTS' CARBON EMISSIONSIn early 2023, we offset the CO2 from Brazil's largest free music festival, Tim Music Rio. It took place in Rio de Janeiro, on one of the world's most famous tourist attractions, the beautiful Copacabana Beach.

The CO2 neutralization was accomplished through regenerative planting in Brazilian agroforestry areas. The festival was a true example of social and environmental impacts combined. An accessible cultural event and carbon neutrality.

3. PATBO'S FASHION SHOW AT NYFW

LFW & NYFW WHY OFFSET EVENTS' CARBON EMISSIONSTo revolutionize an industry, we need the support of like-minded professionals and vice versa.

That's precisely what happened with PatBo in New York City. We united forces with Patricia Bonaldi to be responsible for the show's skincare and bring clean beauty to the runway.

And more: we committed to make the presentation carbon neutral. Every stage of production was considered, from the logistics and assembly to transportation.

CARBON OFFSET + SIMPLE ORGANIC: PART OF OUR DNA

LFW & NYFW WHY OFFSET EVENTS' CARBON EMISSIONSCarbon neutrality is Simple Organic's commitment to the environment, something already ingrained in our DNA. We have a Carbon Neutrality plan for the entire logistics of our production chain.

And do you know who helps us promote these fantastic initiatives? You do!

By purchasing from brands actively engaged in sustainability, you, too, contribute to it. Have you heard about the constructive type of armchair activism?
